Pot O' Gold is anybody's guess

The field is set for the $30,611 Pot O' Gold Futurity at Sun Downs on Sunday, May 8, and it looks like a handicapper's dream. Or nightmare.

Of the 10 entrants, seven received speed indexes ranging from 82 to 86 in the trials on April 24. And of the three who didn't, one of them was the posttime favorite in his trial race. To complicate matters, all of the trials were run into an unrelenting headwind.

The fastest qualifier was Warnock (the #7 horse), owned by Ruben Magallanes and trained by Hector Magallanes, who covered the 300 yards in :15.93. Warnock will be ridden by Luis Torres, who was on in the trial.

Five jockeys each qualified two starters to the final. The other four returning jockeys are Ruben Camacho on #2 Unique Sneak (with an 85 speed index in the trials), A.L. Gutierrez on #3 Ez Seis Me (85), Tim Neal on #5 Bellingham (78), and Jesse Chavis on #8 Uncle Sam Sweetfly (78).
