Wyoming Horse Racing LLC has submitted an application with the Wyoming Pari-Mutuel Commission for four days of live racing in 2011 at Sweetwater Downs north of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The company includes as one of its members Eugene Joyce, whose father Joe Joyce owned and ran Wyoming Downs in Evanston from 1989 to 1998.

“Our window for live racing is from the last two weeks in August to around Labor Day,” said Joyce. “If we’re lucky enough to get the license, we’ll try to get four days in sometime during that timeframe.

“Next year, maybe eight to 12 days of racing,” Joyce continued. “Then we’ll see how quick we can grow the market in the coming years. Part of that involves getting the OTBs up and rolling. That might prove difficult since they’ve been shut down for four months. We would start with Casper, Cheyenne, Rock Springs, and Evanston, but we would also try to expand beyond those four ‘traditional’ sites.

While the Pari-Mutuel Commission completes its due diligence, which could take up to 30 days, Joyce is busy securing the proper agreements with Sweetwater County and Wyoming horsemen. “We already have and agreement in principle with the horsemen,” says Joyce.

“What gives me hope is that my father ran successfully in Wyoming for ten years.”
