Autism Awareness headlines a field of nine runners who will contest the $50,000 Portland Mile on Wednesday, March 23. Autism Awareness is a Grade 3 winner and has accumulated $345,917 in career earnings for owner Johnny Taboada and trainer Genaro Vallejo. He rose to national prominence when he won the 2008 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields at odds of 62-to-1. But an injury forced him to the sidelines and off the Kentucky Derby trail. The 6-year-old is named in honor of Taboadaís son, who suffers from autism, and the horse has helped bring nationwide attention to help battle autism. Autism Awareness breaks from post seven and will be ridden by Juan Jose Hernandez.

Deacon Speakiní and Pretty Katherine also ship in from Golden Gate Fields for the Portland Mile. Deacon Speakiní comes off a solid second-place finish in a $31,000 allowance event at Golden Gate Fields on March 5 and has run solidly over a traditional main track before. Pretty Katherine is the lone mare in the race and makes her second career start at Portland Meadows for leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Pretty Katherine scored a powerful six-length win in the $15,000 City of Roses Handicap on December 10th, and has ran a pair of thirds in her last two starts at Golden Gate Fields. Kevin Krigger has the mount on Pretty Katherine.

Bijou Barrister and Stealth Attack heads the local contingent for the Portland Mile. Bijou Barrister has won seven of eight career starts at Portland Meadows, including an impressive score last time out in an allowance/optional claiming $16K event. Leading jockey Joe Crispin gets the mount for trainer Pat Mullens. Stealth Attack got back to his winning ways in an Overnight Handicap on March 2. He has now won fourteen races in his career and earned over $150,000. Ladner Lad, Born N Blue Genes, Kwik, and Elusive Schemes complete the field for the $50,000 Portland Mile. The Portland Mile will go off as the ninth race, with an approximate post time of 4:16 p.m. Pacific Time (PT).

The $30,000 Portland Meadows Derby is the seventh race on the card and features the return of Alecís Moon, who won the $80,000 Portland Meadows Oaks on January 29. Alecís Moon has remained in training at Golden Gate Fields and ships back to Portland Meadows, where she scored her biggest career win to date. Shamundi, coming off a score in the $35,000 Oregon Thoroughbred Breedersí Derby in his last start, heads the group of local runners. Shamundi has never been off the board in five career starts, and won the $20,000 Bill Wineberg Stakes earlier this season. The Portland Meadows Derby is the seventh race on the card, with an approximate post time of 3:19 p.m. PT.
