Montana Sentate Bill 16, a bill to revise the authority of the Montana Board of Horse Racing (MBoHR) and requirements regarding simulcasts, has cleared the Montana State Senate and is on its way to the House.

The Senate voted 43-5 in favor of the bill on January 19 and was referred to the House Business and Labor Committee on February 1. A hearing there is scheduled for February 8 at 8:00 a.m. in room 172.

The bill would revise the simulcast laws in the state to allow the MBoHR legislative authority to contract for services related to simulcasting (rather than just licensing service providers). The bill could also allow the MBoHR legislative authority to serve as the simulcasting network provider.

“In the emergency situation that we have been in since November, we currently are serving as the provider of the network, and it is helping us stability back to our industry in the state,” states Ryan Sherman, Executive Secretary of the MBoHR.

Sherman has asked Montana residents to contact Business and Labor Committee members. The bill is important, according to Sherman, “not only [to] the future of horse racing in the state, but [for] the impact that it would have on the agricultural industry that supports racing.”
