Fillies are the ones to beat in Corona Chick

Wild West Futurity winner Oh La Traffic and Kindergarten Futurity finalist Julias Walkthru Fire are the only two fillies among the nine 2-year-olds that will compete in the $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap to be held on Saturday at Los Alamitos. The 400-yard test is named in honor of one of the all-time great fillies to have raced here. She is now one of the sport’s premier broodmares.

Stan Young’s Oh La Traffic posted a half length win in the inaugural running of the $91,000 Wild West Futurity on October 23 while defeating Larry Chapple and Jim Hanson’s Classic Blush, who is one of the seven boys that will be challenging the two fillies in the Corona Chick. Oh La Traffic has won her last two starts at Los Alamitos for trainer Bret Vickery. The other filly in the race is Julias Walkthru Fire, who was recently purchased privately by Chaparral Racing. She’ll be making her first start for trainer Carlos Lopez.

The daughter of Walk Thru Fire opened a lot of eyes earlier this season when she won her first two starts, including a Kindergarten trial by a length. After running sixth to West Coast Hawk in the final, Julias Walkthru Fire took some time off until returning with a trial win to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity and then a fifth place finish in the final. She’ll be tough to beat here if she delivers her best performance.
