Washington Stateís all-time leading earner will be making his Oregon debut as 2008 Grade 3 Longacres Mile winner Wasserman headlines the $20,000 Inaugural Handicap on the Monday, October 4, opening day card at Portland Meadows. Wasserman has ten career victories and over $534,000 in career earnings for owner/trainer Howard Belvoir. Wasserman's regular rider, Jennifer Whitaker, will make the trip down.

Wasserman is yet to break through in 2010, but just finished a game second behind 2010 Longacres Mile winner Noosa Beach in the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic at Emerald Downs. Much of Wassermanís best work has come as a closing sprinter, which will be the tactics heíll employ in the Inaugural. Wasserman has drawn post 6 and is the slight 3-to-1 morning line favorite.

Another who should attract attention is the red hot Emancipated for trainer Robbie Baze. Emancipated has won two straight races against solid competition at Emerald Downs and has lured defending Portland Meadows riding champion Joe Crispin to take the mount. Emancipated very well could find himself forwardly placed on the lead or sitting just off it, as the Inaugural does not appear to have a lot of speed on paper. Emancipated will break from the rail and is 7-to-2 on the morning line.

Carry On John and Olympic Lights are also both Emerald shippers who merit some consideration. Carry on John has won two out his last three starts and has hit the board in 5 of 7 career starts at the six furlong distance. Emerald Downs leading jockey from the recently concluded spring/summer meeting Ricky Frazier will come down for the ride. Olympic Lights is a speedy sort who knows how to find the Winnerís Circle. Trained by Charles Essex and to be ridden again by Troy Stillwell, Olympic Lights relishes the 6 furlong distance with 7 wins from 15 starts at that distance. Stealth Attack, Air Pegasus, Overtime Victory and Dance Composer make up the rest of the field of eight for the Inaugural Handicap.

The Inaugural Handicap is the headlining event for the nine race Opening Day card at Portland Meadows on Monday October 4th. First post time is 12:40 p.m. and the Inaugural is scheduled to go to post at 3:56 p.m. Portland Meadows Pick 4 will start in race 6 and cover races 6 through 9. The Pick 4 is now featuring a 14% takeout on the wager each and every day, which is the lowest takeout on that wager in the nation. Post time for the sixth race and the start of the Pick 4 is at 3:00 p.m.
