Trainer William Leech’s three qualifiers, topped by fastest-qualifier Poutnokey, lead the $100,302 Canada Cup Futurity Sunday afternoon at Whoop-Up Downs in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

On the same program, fastest-qualifier Jackpine Savage is among three of the top-five fastest-qualifiers who trainer Stan Webb saddles in the $31,346 Canada Cup Derby.

Pete Schoeler’s homebred Poutnokey, by Mezoomn out of Poutnlori (by Okey Dokey Dale), chases his fourth consecutive win and his second stakes win during that span. The gelding easily won the Alberta Stallion Breeders Futurity at Northlands Park on August 22 and built on that effort when setting the fastest qualifying mark to the Canada Cup Futurity.

In his Canada Cup Futurity trial, Poutnokey humbled his opposition by more than a length with a :17.960 time for the 350 yards, the quickest time from four trials on September 5.

The Leach-trained Anazoom, by Azoom out of Anns Dashing Beduino (by First Down Dash), won his trial by three-quarters of a length with the third-fastest time of :18.090. It was his first win from six starts for owners Edward Vanee and Darcy Edwards.

Anazoom showed promise early in the year with a third-place finish in the Dixie Downs Futurity after a tardy start.

Rounding out the Leech qualifiers is seventh-fastest qualifier TR Dashing, by TR Dasher out of Corona Clique (by Corona Cartel). He won his maiden in his trial after finishing fourth in the John Deere Evergreen Juvenile Challenge.

In the Canada Cup Derby, the consistent Jackpine Savage, by Promised Class out of Dash The Night Away (by Royal Quick Dash), holds the edge with his fastest-qualifier trial win backed by a consistent record. Tanya Chomiak’s gelding comes off two straight wins and has finished in the top three in nine of 10 starts.

In his derby trial, Jackpine Savage won by half a length with a :19.870 time for 400 yards in the second of three trials. Two starts ago, he completed a futurity/derby double with his win in the Alberta Stallion Breeders Derby. He took the accompanying futurity last year.

The remaining Webb-trained qualifiers are fourth-fastest qualifier KR Tsunami and fifth-fastest qualifier Casino High.
