Benny Rosset’s Stylish Jess BR, the reigning AQHA champion aged mare, will go after her third major stakes victory of the year when she headlines one of the deepest fields in recent history of the Grade 1 $150,000 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Course. The Mildred Vessels is slated as the ninth race on the card with a post time of approximately 10:07 p.m. First post on Saturday is 7:00 p.m.

Trained by Paul Jones, Stylish Jess Br could find herself on the diamond lane towards another champion aged mare title if she’s able to win the Millie Vessels. After all, the daughter of Feature Mr Jess has already won the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap and the Merial California Distaff Challenge. A victory in this race would give her the tiaras of the three most high profile open races for distaffers on the grounds. Cesar De Alba will ride her from post six.

The new girl on the block is Pink Boots RM, who will make her first stakes start against older mares while also shooting for her seventh win in a row. The filly by Walk Thru Fire has been unstoppable for Isla Vista Ranch Ss and trainer Adan Farias since being claimed for $10,000 on August 29. Her six wins have all been by a 1/2 length or more and she’s never trailed after the break in any of those outings. Bullet fast and razor sharp, Pink Boots RM will be looking to join an outstanding list of 3-year-old fillies that have won the Mildred Vessels. Since 1990, that list includes Stylish Jess BR (2008), Blues Girl Too (2007), AB What A Runner (2003), Dashing Folly (1996), Down With Debt (1993) and Corona Chick (1992).

Other standouts include the classy My Lady First, a winner of over $500,000, which most recently beat the males in the Bank of America California Championship, and four-time 2010 stakes winner Merridoc Hawk. Rancho El Cabresto Inc’s Chalala is just as hot as Pink Boots RM, as she’s also won her last six starts.

PCQHRA Breeders Derby Trials on Friday card

One week after enjoying the highest of highs when their A Tempting Dash upset World Champion Freaky in the Go Man Go Handicap, owner Jose Ramon Sandoval and trainer Jose Flores will sent out the impressive Headturner to begin his quest of his third derby win of the year in the trials to the PCQHRA Breeders Derby Friday at Los Alamitos.

Headturner is one of 21 sophomores that will be in action in the 400 yard trials with the 10 fastest qualifiers moving on to derby final on Friday, October 1.
