Camels & Ostriches to Race at Canterbury

Canterbury Park’s fourth annual Extreme Race Day, Sunday, August 8, will feature nine horse races, including two Thoroughbred stakes, plus exhibition races by camels and ostriches. Several of the races on the program have unique conditions or are at distances not normally carded at Canterbury. The program begins at 1:30 pm. Admission and parking are free.

The camel race is scheduled for 3:10 pm. The ostrich race will be held after the seventh race, at approximately 4:50 pm.

The $35,000 Brian Barenscheer Juvenile Stakes, at 5˝ furlongs, has attracted a field of six 2-year-olds. The $50,000 John Bullit Stakes, at 1-1/16 miles on the turf course, drew seven entries.

Also part of the program is a 100 yard race, named The Dash In A Flash, where seven American Quarter Horses line up to race a football field’s length. Defending champion Wheely Fast returns for owners Al and Claire Lundgren of Plymouth, Minnesota.

The Blazing Saddles is a 3˝ furlong dash for Thoroughbreds. Entries include Humble Smarty, winner of the $75,000 Claiming Crown Rapid Transit. The Dirty Dozen is a one-mile turf race restricted to horses that have never won on the turf.

Sunday is also Pepsi Family Day at Canterbury Park with free pony rides, petting zoo, and face painters.
