Live horse racing returns to Montana Expo Park on Friday, July 23, for a 2-weekend meet that concludes on August 1. The racing season is presented by Montana Racing LLC, and features Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, and Paint and Appy racing over six days for more than $80,000 in purses. Posttimes on Saturdays and Sundays are 1:30 p.m. Posttime on Fridays are 4:30 p.m.

Some of the featured races that fans can expect to see will be the annual Charlie M Russell Quarter Horse Futurity and Quarter Horse Derby, the Cascade County Invitational, the Montana State Fair Handicap, and the Treasure State Futurity.

Indian Relays return to Great Falls during the second weekend, following the last race of the day on Friday, July 30, Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1.

Horsemen have stuffed the entry box for opening weekend, with 194 horses entered for 29 races over the three-race-day weekend for an average of 6.69 horses-per-race to fill the eight-horse gate. The best day of the three appears to be Saturday, July 24, when 77 horses are scheduled to go to post in 10 races, three of which sport the increasingly rare “also-eligibles.”

There is free admission to the races July 23-25 and free admission to the races with a paid admission to the Fair July 30-August 1st.
