$64,620 in purses in the Adequan Sandy Downs Derby Challenge and the John Deere Sandy Downs Juvenile Challenge

The AQHA Challenge rolls into Sandy Downs for two Championships on Saturday— the $27,810 Adequan Sandy Downs Derby Challenge and the $36,810 John Deere Sandy Downs Juvenile Challenge are the 5th and 7th races on the 8-race Saturday evening card.

In the Derby, trainer Bret Vickery brings fastest qualifier Sheza Bad Habit for owner Alvin Jonas. The 3-year-old set a track record in first of two trials on June 11, covering 400 yards in :19.662 to break Diamonds Tiny Effort's year-old mark of :19.740.

Track records have become a good habit for Sheza Bad Habit after setting a track record at Sun Downs in their trials for the Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge on April 18. The brand new record was dispatched in the very next race by Daddies Little Girl, but Sheza Bad Habit turned the tables on that filly in the final on May 2.

Regular rider Paul Greene gets the mount on the 2-to-1 favorite. Greene is perfect on the filly, with three wins in three tries.

Looking to pull the upset is Gary Chumbley's homebred Cupids Dash, trained by Scott Raley and ridden by Joe Crispin. Cupids Dash won the $21K Portland Meadows Derby on March 22.

Also in the mix is Clark N Eye, winner of the $11K Dixie Downs Derby on April 17 and the $24K Bitterroot Derby on May 23.

In the trials for the John Deere Sandy Downs Juvenile Challenge on June 12, no fewer than 14 contestants earned S.I.'s of over 100. Six qualifiers were under the 9-year-old track record. The 2YOs had to be faster than fast to make this final.

In the third of four trials that day, Dixie Downs Futurity runner-up Lajolla Famosa broke Prince County's track record that had stood since September 23, 2001, running the 350 yards in :17.458.

This time, the record would only last for 25 minutes, as Separate Gig, a Dixie Downs Futurity qualifier who tuned up for the trials with an allowance win at Pocatello Downs, roared down the stretch in :17.265.

Separate Gig is installed as the 7-to-2 favorite, with Lajolla Famosa the third-favorite at 9-to-2.
