Sandy Downs 2010 racing dates finalized, big races added

The 2010 Ida Racing season at Sandy Downs has been finalized with a total of 17 confirmed race dates, plus the last minute addition of five prestigious Quarter Horse Stakes races.

The ’10 horse racing season kicks off Friday evening June 11 and extends through Saturday August 28. Racing will be conducted primarily on a Friday and Saturday evening format starting at 6 p.m. Sunday afternoon racing on June 27 and July 25 begins at 2 p.m.

“Without question, this is biggest meet ever planned at Sandy Downs,” said Ida Racing General Manager Jim Bernard. “Not only will we be offering great Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing all season, we will also be unveiling the most progressive special events calendar ever. We’ll have events that touch on all demographics of community—from fundraisers and concerts to family days and barbeques. It’s going to be lots fun!”

Just added to the Sandy Downs Stakes schedule are the Idaho Cup Quarter Horse Futurity, Derby and Maturity. The Quarter Horse Derby and Maturity are set for Friday night July 9, while the rich Idaho Cup Quarter Futurity is the centerpiece on Saturday July 17.

Also announced earlier by the American Quarter Horse Association was three of their key races awarded to Sandy Downs. They include the Adequan Sandy Downs Derby Challenge, the John Deere Sandy Downs Juvenile Challenge and the Red Cell Sandy Downs Distance Challenge.

Both the Derby Challenge and Juvenile Challenge are scheduled for Saturday evening June 26. The Distance Challenge is booked for closing night, August 28.

Other important stakes include the Bateman-Hall John Deere Bonus Challenge, June 12; Maiden Frolic, July 3; Intermountain Stallion Futurity and Derby, July 25; Hawthorne Futurity, July 31; Idaho Cup Thoroughbred Finals, August 14; and the Bosen Futurity and Derby, August 28.

For the first time in several years, Sandy Downs will be offering full card simulcasting from selected major tracks throughout North America. Full card simulcasting will be begin at 2 p.m. on live race days only and conclude with the final race of the night from Los Alamitos.
