Headed by Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby winner Headturner, a total of 26 runners will compete in three trials to the Grade 2 $214,400 El Primero Del Derby on Friday night, March 19, at Los Alamitos. The purse to the Grade 2 400-yard final to be held on April 9 will be the richest since Runaway Winner came away victorious in the 1988 running of the El Primero.

Owned by Jose Ramon Sandoval, Headturner will also look to score a first ever derby double. Since the inception of the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in 2001, no winner of the Winter Derby has gone on to win the El Primero Del Ano Derby or La Primera Del Ano Derby. Trained by Jose Flores, Headturner was so impressive in his Winter Derby victory that there's no doubt that he ranks among the top contenders to advance to the El Primero finale. To be ridden by Rodrigo Aceves, Headturner will be in action in the first of three trials.

The opening trial has several interesting contenders, including Lucas Racing Inc's Surf Dog. A full brother to Wave Carver and Ocean Runaway, the big-boned Surf Dog will be making his first start of the year. Owner and breeder Dan Lucas always figured that his Maryland-bred sprinter would do his best work as a sophomore, so this makes for an interesting 2010 debut for the son of First Down Dash.

Lucas will also send out his homebred Bring The Bling, who enters this race after running fifth in the Winter Derby. Harems Last Dash, who also ran in the Winter Derby, and Kindergarten Futurity runner-up Runaway Tyme are also in the second trial. Multiple Grade 1 stakes finalist Forrest Hawk, Golden State Million Futurity finalist Whole Lot Of Karma, John Andreini's Hawks Audition, who won a trial to the Golden State Million Futurity, and Corona Chick Handicap winner Separate Lives are among the top runners in a wide open third trial.
