Citing insufficient purse monies, Shirley McClellan, chair of Horse Racing Alberta, the province's governing body of the sport, said on September 28 that Northlands Park was shortening its 2009 race meet.

The meet, originally scheduled to run through October 25, will now end October 12, for a total of 89 days. The track had planned to run 96 days, but McClellan said the "the decision is about fiscal responsibility in our industry."

The stalled development of the Thoroughbred track planned for Balzac is the main reason for purse shortages. That track and associated slots were to open in 2007. Stampede Park accepted race dates in 2007 and 2008, but southern Alberta saw racing only at Rocky Mountain Turf Club in Lethbridge in 2009. RMTC's fall meeting runs through October 25.
