LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA…. Dennie and Kris Hill’s AB What A Runner, the champion 3-year-old filly last year, suffered a cut around the left front hoof area that will likely keep her out of action for at least the next two months. The injury occurred when a rival stepped on AB What A Runner during the running of the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos. The millionaire mare finished last in the 10-horse field.

“The cut did not take any of the hoof off but it was a deep cut,” said trainer Brett Vickery. “Dr. Rick Overly did a great job taking care of the injury. It will be awhile before AB What A Runner comes back but we are confident that the cut will heal up perfectly. If it does not heal up great then we might not run her again. She does not owe us anything and her overall well being is more important to us.

“She will tell us what she wants to do next. She has a Strawfly Special weanling and a surrogate mare is carrying another Strawfly Special, so we have that to look forward to.”

The next Grade 1 race strictly for fillies and mares at Los Alamitos is the Charger Bar Handicap to be held in mid-January. AB What A Runner won the Charger Bar this year.
