With negotiations for a live racing season in Boise at a standstill, connections of Idaho-bred horses were wondering if the annual Idaho Cup races would even happen this year.

When Idaho Falls Horse Racing (IFHR) successfully petitioned the Idaho Horse Racing Commission to run extra days at Sandy Downs, the decision offered a glimmer of hope to owners of Idaho-bred horses who sustained eligibility in Idaho Cup races.

Representatives of horsemen’s groups—the IFHR, Idaho Thoroughbred Association (ITA), and Idaho Quarter Horse Association—have negotiated dates for Idaho Cup races at Sandy Downs.

“The ITA Board met on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, to make decisions regarding out 2009 Idaho Cup Program. We would like to announce the NEW date and venue for the 2009 Idaho Cup: Saturday, September 19, 2009, at Sandy Downs in Idaho Falls.” The letter also announced that the Idaho Cup Sprint and Claiming stakes will be set up as overnight stakes.

ITA president Tawnja Elison says that owners who had sustained nominations for horses entered in the Futurity have overwhelmingly asked that the race be run in two divisions rather than using trails to whittle down the field.
