Emerald Downs stakes action begins this weekend

The road to the Emerald Derby and Washington Oaks begins this week as 3-year-olds square off in the $30,000 Inaugural Stakes and the $30,000 Auburn Stakes.

Sophomore fillies meet in the six-furlong Inaugural Stakes on Saturday, April 25, and 3-year-olds colts and geldings meet in the six-furlong Auburn Stakes on Sunday, April 26. They are the first of 35 added-money events worth $2,015,000 to be run at the 2009 meeting.

Ladyledue (2-2-0-0-$50,261) will put her unblemished mark on the line in the Inaugural. Trained by Bonnie Jenne for owner Jon Sather, the Washington-bred by Slewdledo won the Knights Choice and Diane Kem Stakes by a combined 12¾ lengths last year, and has trained exceptionally well for her 2009 debut.

Broadway Hennessey (7-2-1-0-$64,320) was a stakes winner in Northern California last year and has been nominated to the Inaugural by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Leading trainer Tim McCanna and leading stakes trainer Doris Harwood have nominated two horses each to the Auburn. Eight-time local training champion McCanna nominated Rooster City (5-1-1-2-$24,897) and Snake Attack (4-2-0-1-$23,800) while Harwood, winner of 19 stakes the last two seasons, nominated Enumerator (3-2-0-0-$33,660) and Noosa Beach (4-2-1-1-$55,375).

Hollendorfer also nominated a runner to the Auburn, Kentucky-bred Rendezvous (7-3-1-2-$67,467), a Victory Gallop colt who finished third to Chocolate Candy in the El Camino Real Derby (GIII) at Golden Gate Fields.
