Six fillies clash in the 300-yard Debutante Handicap for three-year-old fillies on Saturday night, January 17, at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Leading the fray is the talented filly Azoom Babe from the barn of trainer Paul Jones. Although she's only made three starts to date in her young career, this daughter of Azoom has looked outstanding in her two most recent outs. After a troubled start in May's Kindergarten Futurity trials, she returned stronger than ever in late November and has since rattled off two consecutive victories here at Los Alamitos. Most recently she defeated a strong field of allowance rivals that included a pair of solid runners in The Shazoom Alliance and Our Separarte Chic. She's also earned back-to-back speed figures of 90 or better in these two outs and appears to have the makings of a future stakes star.

Another nice talent is the Chris O’Dell trained filly Sizzling Pj. Three races back, she was nipped at the wire in an allowance race that she had led from the very first call on November 7th. Although she ended up second in the race, she did finish ahead of Ed Burke Juvenile Stakes finalist Dance Baby. Following that effort, she won a 220-yard allowance event in late November, earning an 88 speed index for the victory. In her last out, she was fourth against a field of runners that included Hawkish Got Rhythm and Hes Regal, the third-place finisher from the 2008 Kindergarten Futurity. With a great deal of experience versus stakes-caliber competition, the Parsons Family Trust-owned filly could pose a serious threat to get the victory.

Trainer Paul Jones also brings two other dangerous contenders into the race in Splendifferous and Stel Katrina.

A regally-bred daughter of Mr Jess Perry, Splendifferous comes from an outstanding female family, as her dam is 1994 Heritage Place Futurity winner and $329,000 earner Daring Difference. Splendifferous first made a name for herself after qualifying to the Golden State Million Futurity here at Los Alamitos and then winning her trial to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity later that same month. Her next start would come in the Two Million Juvenile, a race in which she made up ground late to go from 9th to 5th after breaking slowly at the start.

Stel Katrina is an interesting prospect. A three-year-old daughter of Stel Corona, she'll be making her first local start here in Southern California. Although she hasn't started at Los Alamitos yet, she does bring valuable experience into the race, as she qualified to three different futurities in 2008 including the Pot O' Gold Futurity, the Firecracker Futurity, and the Baxter Andruss Oregon Bred Juvenile. A homebred from the state of Oregon, she'll be making her first lifetime start for AQHA Champion Trainer Paul Jones in this event.
