TRJ believes that the Western Provinces of Canada are showing the way for the sport of kings in North America, and recent recognition confirms that opinion.

The Sovereign Awards recognize the best in Canadian racing. During the 34th Sovereign Awards ceremony on December 12, Alberta- and Manitoba-based Janine Stianson was named top apprentice jockey (see the full article in the January issue of TRJ). Bonneyville, Alberta’s Danny Dion won honors when his horse Fatal Bullet captured Horse of the Year in Canada. Dion has burst onto the racing scene in the last decade by investing major dollars and taking aim at North America’s top races.

The awards keep coming south of the border, where the Eclipse Awards honor the top achievements in Thoroughbred racing. When the awards are announced in Miami Beach, Florida, on January 26, Alberta racing will again be in the spotlight.

After taking top honors during the Eclipse Awards in 2007, CTV-Alberta and Horse Racing Alberta this year received honorable mention for their coverage of the Ky Alta Stakes, which aired on July 1, 2008.

This year, Louisville, Kentucky, television station WAVE3-TV won the Media Eclipse Award for its local coverage.

TRJ congratulates the hardworking horsemen and horsewomen of Canadian racing, the strong equine organizations and sponsors that strengthen the sport, and all the winners of these prestigious awards.
