David Michael Lopez to replace Joe Crispin on Team Portland Meadows

First Annual Golden Gate vs. Portland Meadows Jockey Challenge takes place on Wednesday

David Michael Lopez has been tabbed as Joe Crispin’s replacement for the 1st Annual Golden Gate vs. Portland Meadows Jockey Challenge brought to you by XpressBet on Wednesday, January 7th.

Crispin, who was scheduled to participate in the challenge, suffered a fractured hip when his mount clipped heels and fell in the third race on December 29. He will be out for approximately eight weeks.

Russell Baze and three of his colleagues fly up from northern California to take on four of the top riders at Portland Meadows in the First Annual Golden Gate vs. Portland Meadows Jockey Challenge, sponsored by XpressBet, on January 7. The competition will consist of four XpressBet Jockey Challenge races and $20,000 in prize money.

Baze is racing’s all-time winningest rider with over 10,200 wins in his illustrious career and is once again leading the Golden Gate rider standings. Baze’s son-in-law Kyle Kaenal, who is currently fourth in the Golden Gate rider standings will also be part of Team Golden Gate. Francisco Duran and Leslie Mawing will complete the team of California riders.

Team Portland Meadows features four top local riders. Debbie Hoonan-Trujillo has been atop the Portland Meadows win list for most of the season. Mark Anderson is second in the standings in his first season at Portland Meadows. Javier Matias and David Michael Lopez, who steps in for injured jockey Joe Crispin, complete the lineup for Team Portland Meadows.

The XpressBet Jockey Challenge will be shown live on HRTV with host Jon White and three time Kentucky Derby winner and Hall of Famer Gary Stevens.
