Blue Ribbon Downs is set to begin its 48th consecutive racing season fall meeting on Friday, August 1. This is the 24th pari-mutuel season, and is the 5th season under the current owner, Backstretch LLC.

According to Blue Ribbon Downs Marketing Manager Bonnie Cusimano, Blue Ribbon Downs is the location of the first million-dollar horse race ever televised nationally in 1983 with the Black Gold Futurity, a truly amazing accomplishment for a track whose marketing area is one of the least populated in the country.

Trials for the 27th running of the Black Gold Futurity, 300 Yard Division, take place on August 2. The finals will be run on August 16. The winner will join many other Quarter Horses “Who’s Who” like Easy Jet, See Me Do It, Gold Coast Express and Miss Blue Chew who have graced our winnerís circle.

Blue Ribbon Downs, west of Sallisaw on highway 64, began as a 350 yard straightaway with the best seat in the house on the hood of a car or the end bed of a pickup. It now has a recently refinished 7Ĺ furlong banked oval with a 440-yard straightaway and is overlooked by a modern climate controlled clubhouse and an attached all-weather paddock.

Before the meeting has opened, a purse increase was announced by Racing Secretary Jim Pursley. For more information about the races and the track, visit http://www.blueribbondowns.net.
