Racing began at Marquis Downs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on Friday, May 23, and horsemen can expect increased purses at almost every level for the 30-day meet.

The 22 stakes purses will see an overall 11% jump. The September 6 Saskatchewan Derby sees the largest jump, from $10,000 to $25,000.

Lower-level, non-maiden claiming races rise 6%, and upper-level claimers see a 19% increase. Only Maiden 3-and-up purses remain at 2007 levels.

Rick Flor, manager of horse racing, attributes the increases to the dozen video monitors installed at Marquis Downs, the in-house simulcast center, and a grant from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Association.
