The Thoroughbreds are back, and the 2008 season at Emerald Downs is right around the corner.

The track opened for training on Monday, February 4, as horses begin to prepare for the 91-day meeting that runs from April 18 to September 28.

Barn superintendent Vern Baze said that he expected about 100 horses on the grounds for the first day of training. The count should rise to over 300 by the second week and up to 800 by March 1. Stable capacity is 1,257.

Training hours are from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily.
