Iowa's Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has hired David Schmitt, DVM, as the new state veterinarian.

Schmitt owned a private veterinary practice before joining the department in 1999. He served as assistant state veterinarian for nearly seven years and has been the acting state veterinarian since April of 2006.

As the state vet, Schmitt will oversee the Department's Animal Industry Bureau, which oversees regulation of animal movement, exhibitions, importation, and disease eradication and control campaigns. The state veterinarian also plays an important role in preparing for and responding to any foreign animal disease or natural disaster concern. Iowa's Bureau also regulates certain commercial companion animal breeders and retailers.
