John Henry Passes at Age 32

Everyone who knows the story of the humbly bred, cantankerous John Henry wanted the racing legend to meet a peaceful end.

That happened on Monday, October 8, at Kentucky Horse Park.

Age finally caught up with the tough old man, who had been living with Cushing’s disease and kidney failure for several months. When equine-health experts determined that he could not be kept comfortable, his connections made the decision to euthanize him. Those same connections stayed close at hand to see John Henry off to his posthumous adventures.

John Henry will be buried close to the paddock he occupied for 16 years in the Hall of Champions. A public memorial service is planned; go to for updates, and to learn more about this great racing champion. You can also contribute to the John Henry Memorial fund at that site.
