Over the course of one weekend, two horses—each making its first-ever start—equaled the fastest ever 5-furlong time by 2-year-old runners at the Auburn oval. The mark of :571 was established by Packy in 2004.

On Saturday, June 23, the homebred filly Katie’s Cruiser (He’s Tops, out of Millfleur, by Green Dancer) under Juan Guiterrez won her $30,000 maiden-claiming event in the record time for trainer Steve Bullock and owner-breeders Oak Crest Farm. She broke on top and never looked back, winning by 6½ lengths.

On Sunday, June 24, a gelding repeated the filly’s effort in a race with matching conditions. Tackling the 5 furlongs under Gallyn Mitchell for trainer Jim Penney, Courageous Son (He’s Tops, out of Silent Assembly, by General Assembly) broke last and greenly, but soon found his winning stride. He finished better than 6¼ lengths ahead of his rivals for owners R and R Warren LLC.

Including these two, the sire He’s Tops has 4 winners from 14 juvenile starts at the 2007 Emerald Downs meet.
