Canterbury Park Jockey Colony Welcomes Another Winner to the Fold

It took apprentice jockey Jeanna Joubert just eight tries to find her way to the Canterbury Park winnerís circle. Her sense of direction was no doubt honed in the years she followed her parents into the circle as they greeted their homebreds and other horses they raced.

Joubertís win came Thursday, June 7, in the fifth race, her second ride on the 2-year-old Marina Nolan. She had ridded the filly to a fourth-place finish earlier in the season for trainer Randy Rarick, and this time booted her home at odds of 18.5-to-1.

Joubert was introduced to horses by her parents, who are owner/breeders. She moved through pony club and dressage and into racetrack work. At Canterbury, she worked for trainer Noel Hickey in the mornings. He appreciated her help, and kept her on as an exercise rider at his Florida farm after the season ended. Later stints as an exercise rider for D. Wayne Lucas and Steve Asmussen gave her experience that seems to be paying off early in her career as a race rider.
